Our Story
Stage Couture was founded in 2005 by Lanette Willis - a lifetime dancer, dance teacher and choreographer, who began costuming for her own advanced students in 2003. “I struggled with costumes for my first few years as a choreographer because the costume companies weren’t providing what I wanted for my teens in terms of style, and hiring a custom seamstress what out of our students’ price range.” Lanette spent hours searching through stacks of costume catalogs, scouring teen stores on the internet and local malls, and though she could barely sew, she even found herself up late at night with a needle and thread! “I thought about the difficulty I was having, and talked to other dance teachers experiencing the same dilemma with teenage students... I also remembered years as a dancer when I had to wear itchy costumes, ill-fitting costumes, or costumes that I hated…. and I realized there was a need for another costume company.” So she decided to simply start one. She quit her corporate job, took her knowledge of the dance industry, dove into the apparel industry, and started a contemporary-styled, high quality costume business that caters to advanced students. Stage Couture’s first collection was launched nationally in 2007, and the company quickly developed a coast-to-coast client list, including the nation’s most prestigious and award-winning dance studios. We love the thrill of dance competitions, ever so memorable annual recitals, the recent wave of fantastic hit dance TV shows, dance movies, and the quirky clips of unknown artists on YouTube. We love to see the world dancing!! And we want to help it thrive. We work very hard on our costumes to give you that little extra boost of confidence before you take the stage. We want you to love your costumes almost as much as you love this wonderful art form ;)
